For most upper-elementary kids (roughly 8–10), a few short study sessions spread across several days tend to work better than one long cram the night before — and quizzing your child (flashcards, a practice spelling test) usually beats having them re-read the list, because trying to recall something is what makes it stick.

A good move is to reward the studying itself — showing up to each short session — rather than the test score, which your child doesn't fully control. Every child is different, so treat this as a starting point and adjust to what you see. This page walks through both moves, using study techniques with strong support in learning research.[1][2][3]

The trap

Why cramming feels productive but rarely sticks

Cramming isn't laziness — it's the most natural way to study, and it works just enough to keep everyone doing it. A long session the night before can carry a child through tomorrow's quiz. The hidden cost: material packed in all at once tends to leak back out just as fast.

The fix is almost annoyingly simple. In studies of adults and older students, the same total study time tends to stick far better when it's spread across several days instead of massed into one sitting — a pattern researchers call spaced practice.[1][2] Three ten-minute reviews across the week tend to beat one thirty-minute cram the night before. The calendar matters more than the clock.

Where the evidence comes from

That spacing research was built mostly on adults and teenagers, so the next section leads with the child-specific evidence. For younger kids, spreading the same minutes out is a low-risk bet — it costs nothing to try.

The highest-value move

Quiz, don't re-read

If you change one thing, change this. Most kids (and parents) reach for re-reading — going over the list or notes again. It feels productive. But in a study of fourth-graders (mean age about 10), children who practised recalling what they'd learned — closing the book and trying to retrieve it — remembered meaningfully more than those who re-studied.[4] Psychologists call this retrieval practice, or the testing effect.

The mechanism is the effort. Pulling a fact out of memory is harder than reading it again, and that difficulty is exactly what strengthens it. Re-reading is smooth and pleasant, which is why it fools us: it creates a feeling of knowing that runs ahead of the real memory — documented most clearly in college students, so read it as a general principle.[3] A thirty-second quiz cuts through that illusion, showing what's genuinely solid and what only felt solid.

The reward rule

Reward the session, never the score

Here's a boundary we hold firmly, because it's easy to get backwards: reward the study session, never the score. A study session is something your child controls — they can sit down, open the cards, and try. A test score is not: it rides on the questions that came up, how they slept, a hundred things outside their hands.

Tie a reward to the score and you pile pressure on something they can't reliably earn. Tie it to the studying and you're rewarding the action that's theirs to give.

The policy side agrees

A national education ministry that has moved to de-emphasise exam scores in its primary schools makes the same case on the reward side: leaning too hard on the score can work against a child's more enduring motivation to learn.[5] (That policy is about lowering the stakes, not about spacing or self-quizzing.) Try this, this week

  1. 1Put the sessions on the calendar. Instead of one cram, block three tiny reviews across the week — Mon / Wed / Fri, ten minutes each. Spacing does its work through the calendar.
  2. 2Make each session a quiz, not a re-read. Cover-and-say, flashcards (answer before the flip), or a three-question practice test. Trying to recall is the active ingredient.
  3. 3Coin the session the moment it's done. Mark it together in about twenty seconds — a photo, how it felt — and drop the coin. It lands on the sitting down and quizzing, never on the future score.
  4. 4Save toward something your child chose. The effort visibly adds up to a reward they picked — ownership, not compliance.

Crutch or scaffold?

Is this a crutch? Won't studying become "transactional"?

Fair question. It can be, if you never stop — but done right, it's the opposite.

The worry has a name, and it mostly doesn't apply here. Rewarding a child for something they already love can dampen their interest (the overjustification effect). But studying a spelling list isn't something most kids do for fun. For genuinely hard, low-interest tasks, a reward paired with encouragement tends to build the getting-going motivation, not erode it.[6] (Keeping the coin off the score is simpler still: don't attach a payout to something out of their hands.)

Praise is the active ingredient; the coin is scaffolding. The words that name the effort — "you put the sessions in this week" — are what last, because they build a child's sense of "I can do this." The coin just gets their attention, so it always rides alongside those words.[7]

You're meant to fade it — that's the plan, not a failure. A coin for every session is how you start. As the routine sticks:

"What if my kid asks for a coin for studying?"

Early on that's a good sign — they noticed their own effort, so praise it and often say yes. Only if it hardens into "I'll only study IF you give me a coin," that's your cue to fade faster: coins are earned after a session, never bargained before. Graduation is your child spacing their own study, no coin in sight.

Is cramming really that bad?

What's the single most useful study trick?

My child feels totally ready after re-reading — why quiz?
